Market Recap for Tuesday, August 9th, 2016 It was another quiet trading session. With no major items on the economic calendar and earnings season coming to a close (90% of S&P companies have reported), there was little to move the markets. In fact, it was the 19th day in a row that the S&P moved less than 1% in either direction! If there was a highlight of the day, it came late morning when the NASDAQ and S&P made new record highs. But after breaking into uncharted territory stocks slipped lower and finished the day flat. Here’s where the major indices ended the day: The S&P finished flat. Up […]

Market Recap for Sunday, August 7th, 2016 After a choppy couple of trading days, stocks were lower heading into Friday. Hoping for some good news, all eyes were on Friday’s Jobs Report. West Virginia is leading a coalition of 13 states that have filed a lawsuit against the Environmental Protection Agency. The suit is over the agency’s rules for oil and gas, which the suit calls a job-killing attack on industry employees. The states have filed the suit in the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. The suit calls for the court to review the agency’s rules on methane emissions from wells that make use of hydraulic fracturing. The states have taken the position that the EPA’s rules will hike the costs of production and distribution…
China has installed 20 gigawatts of new solar power just in the first half of this year. This achievement beats analysts’ expectations by a wide margin. China wants to add 20 GW of new solar every year for the next four, but apparently could do twice that. At the end of 2015, China had about 40 gigawatts of installed solar power, so in just six months it has added half as much again. It already surpasses the previous solar champ, Germany. The Crescent Dunes “concentrating solar power” plant in Nevada, operated by a Santa Monica…
